1.(C) Freak the Mighty by Rodman Philbrick
Max is a sad boy who doesn’t have a good self-image of himself. Everyone says he looks like his father. His father was not a good man. Max’s friend that used to be in daycare with him moves in next door. Max always enjoyed Freak’s company because he had his own set of problems. They could relate to each other. The boys have their first adventure as older middle school students when a group of bullies pick on Freak. The boys outsmart Blade and his gang. They overcome that obstacle and name themselves Freak the Mighty. They have plenty of other adventures down the road despite their struggles and baggage they are dealing in life. 2.) (C) 100 Days and 99 Nights by Alan Madison Esme is a girl that has a father in the military on duty. She got to live in different countries because of her father’s job. She grew up with order and routine because her father brought that structure home. They have strict bathroom routines and make pancakes a certain way. Her stuffed animals are organized from A to Z starting from left to right. Esme’s orderly life gets messed up when her dad tells her he has to go on duty for 100 days and 99 nights. Esme feels like she has to run the house and keep things how her Dad kept them. There are struggles along the way including; pancake Saturday not running smoothly, morning routines off and other daily disruptions. 3.) (C) Chocolate Fever by Robert Kimmel Smith Henry Green like any child loves chocolate but his case is different. He extremely loves chocolate. He eats every form imaginable. Then one day he starts to have little, small dark brown spots on his body. His culture results come up as being chocolate! Henry is concerned for his wellbeing. The story continues with him running away, getting hijacked and other weird occurring events. Who knew what chocolate fever could lead too. Interest Level: 3-5 Reading level: 4.8 4.) (P) Love You Forever By Robert Munsch This book is about a Mother loving a son throughout life. No matter what happens or how the boy acts, she always loves him. The book shows different phases of his life; being a baby, terrible toddler, moody teenager teenager and adult who leaves her behind. At the end of the book the roles change and he is holding saying he will love her forever. Interest Level: Pre K-K Grade Level: 3.4 5.) Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day By Judith Viorst Alexander woke up on the wrong side of the day. Everything was going wrong. The day started by him not getting prizes in his cereal. Then a serious of other unfortunate evets occurred including; not having an exciting lunch, getting white sneakers, making his dad bad and having a unrelaxing bath. Even people in Australia have bad days. Interest Level: K-2 Grade Level: 3.9 6.) Hooway For Wodney Wat By Helen Lester Wodney the rat had some difficulties in life. He couldn’t pronounce his r’s, so he got made fun a lot. All the teasing made him very shy, timid and lonely. Then one day a girl name Camilla comes into the class and things change. She was very mean and abrupt. Everything was a competition for her. Interest level: K-2 Grade level: 2.5 7.) Hug Me by Simona Ciraolo Felipe the catus grew up in a family where affection and physical touch weren’t present due to their physical characteristics. Felipe is in desperate of some hugs, but no one will give him a hug. He goes through the book looking for some love and affection. Interest Level: Pre K-2 Grade Level: 1.4 8.) Wilfred Gorden There once was a little boy who lived near an old people’s home. He always visited the residents and enjoyed their company. One day he overheard his parents talking about Ms. Nancy. She lost her memory. Wilfrid Gordon invested more time in learning about what a memory was. After talking with residents he went on a search to look for memories for Ms. Nancy. He gave them to her and the objects jogged her memory. She shared stories with Wilfrid Gordon. Interest level: K-2 Grade level:2.5 9.) Blue on Blue by Dianne White (Rhyming/Illustrations) This is a picture book with little words but lots of detail into the illustrations. The book goes through the different phases of nature’s path of storms starting with morning and ending at night. The book includes a farming family and how they are affected by the different weather combinations. Lots of adjectives, rhyming and descriptions are included in this book. Interest Level:K-2 Grade Level:1.3 10.) (C) Frindle by Andrew Clements Well Nick is in for a challenging year of fifth grade. His teacher Mrs. Granger loves long spelling tests, big dictionaries and challenging students with lots of homework. One day Nick decides to call his pen a Frindle. Mrs. Granger says its not a word but soon everyone starts to use the word. Nick becomes famous overnight and shows Mrs. Granger. Interest level: 4-7 Grade Level: 4.8 11.(C) Freckle Juice by Judy Blume Andrew often gets distracted by freckles. One of his classmate’s has them and he would really like some to count on his own. Good thing a classmate Sharon has a recipe for freckles and the cheap at that. Things don’t go exactly as planned so Nick has to improvise. Interest Level:3-5 Grade Level: 3.6 12.)Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus By Barbara Park] Junie B Jones is finally old enough to go to kindergarten. She starts by going to ortentiaition were her teacher Mrs. shows her around. On the first day of school Junie first starts off the day by riding the bus. Things don’t go smoothly. Throughout the day Junie they make name tags, get a tour of the school and meet the other kids in the classroom. Junie heard stories about the school bus so she decides to hide instead of taking the bus. She goes around the school and then in the end the cops show up with the principle, Mrs. Junie’s Mom and the other rescue mission. The next day she sits with a girl named Grace and warms up to the color yellow. Interest level: 1-3 Grade Level: 2.9 |
